The Definition of a Seedling and Transplant

A seedling is a tree which has grown up in the bed in which it was sown, remaining there one, two, or three years. A transplant, on the other hand, is a seedling which has been moved to another bed and set out separately a few inches apart.

A 3-1 transplant has been in the seedling bed for three years and a transplant bed for one year.

A 2-2 transplant has been in the seedling bed for two years and a transplant bed for two years. The transplant is hardier than a seedling in that it has a more extensive root system. It is not necessarily taller.

When Your Trees Arrive

All trees are wrapped in fresh sphagnum moss and rolled in plastic. Plant your trees as soon as possible! If you can not plant the trees when you receive them, store the trees in a cool, damp place until planted. Keep the trees moist, but not drenched. Do not expose the trees to sun or wind, or else the roots will dry out.

Spacing of Your Trees

If you are planting your trees in a field, you will need about 2700 trees per acre if you are using a 4 ft. x 4 ft. spacing. A 5 ft. x 5 ft. spacing of trees requires about 1700 trees per acre. A 6 ft. x 6 ft. spacing of trees requires about 1200 trees per acre.

If you are planting your trees in your garden before field planting them, plant them about a foot apart. In two years, if you are not ready to place them permanently, be sure to space them two feet apart.

If you are planting a hedge 6 ft or less in height, evergreen trees should be planted about 2-1/2 ft. apart in a single row.

When you are planting trees for a windbreak, space the trees 4 ft. apart. For a double row windbreak, space your trees 6 ft. apart and the rows 6 ft. apart, but alternate the trees in the rows so they are not opposite of each other.
